PAWS Chicago

Here they believe that every life matters.  Once an animal arrives at PAWS, they are safe, and they are guaranteed life, no matter where they come from or what they need.  They are a no-kill shelter (should there be any other kind?) and since opening their doors in 1997, they have helped to drop the number of animals killed in shelters from 42,571 to less than 10,000.  That is amazing!  With PAWS, you can donate, adopt, foster and even volunteer.  Visit their website for more information.

Wright-Way Rescue

Founded in 2003 because of a large number of animals being euthanized.  They are located in Morton Grove, Illinois, but if you know Chicago, you know that is a bordering suburb of Northwest Chicago.  Wright-Way sits on 3.5 acres of land and has been renovated to it has state-of-the-art housing for animals while they wait to be adopted.  When you go to their website, you can watch adoptable animals live!  It’s like a babysitter cam for dogs!

Chicago Canine Rescue

This Chicago rescue was founded because they felt there was no need to euthanize animals just because ‘their time was up’ in the shelter.  How awful is it to end a life simply because you need the room to house more animals?!  Chicago Canine Rescue focuses on finding homes for the city’s most vulnerable animals, the ones who are slated to be euthanized, are too old, too sick, disabled, injured, or maybe just been in a shelter too long.  Check them out because these dogs (and cats!) need a second (or third) chance at a forever home, even if it is not for very long.  They deserve to feel real love in their last days.

City of Chicago

When you go to the website, on the left-hand side it says ‘City Services I Want To…’ under ‘Find/Get’ you will see ‘Pet Adoption Services.’  When you adopt with the city, you will go through a similar screening process as you would at any other adoption agency.  Everyone in your family must interact with the dog before you are approved.  The idea is that you are the dogs forever home, no one wants him to end up back in a shelter in a couple of weeks because you really can’t have a dog.

Have you been to visit one of these shelters before you decided on your rescue dog?  I wish more people would choose to adopt.  All a dog wants is a family (or one single human) to love!  You might even find that he has rescued you, and not the other way around.  If you haven’t yet adopted a dog but are reading this article, you are on the right track!

Have you visited one of these shelters?  Maybe you have been to some other Chicago area shelters?  Share your experience with us below in the comments!
