Man Risks Life to Save Dogs from Burning Building

Jim Coates, also known as JC, for short, suffered third-degree burns after saving his three dogs from a fire at his home near 23rd Avenue and Flower Street in Phoenix, Arizona. The fire happened on Sunday, May 29, 2016. Coates is currently hospitalized at Maricopa County Medical Hospital for his burns, in stable condition, with burns on his head, neck, and hands. The three dogs were safely rescued by Coates from the fire. One escaped without injury, while the other two were given oxygen, using a canine breathing mask, at the scene by firefighters. The home was destroyed as a result of the fire.

Firefighters arrived on the scene of the fire at around midnight, they saw Jim’s car, located in the carport, on fire and then the fire quickly spread to the house. At this time, it is not known what caused the fire. Coates had no insurance on his home, according to some of his friends.

Jim Coates works at the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control in Mesa, Arizona. He has been employed there for more than ten years.

Jim’s friends describe him as an animal lover with a huge heart. Tara, his friend, and neighbor, told AZ Family, “He does everything and anything for everybody. He’s a great person. That’s the first thing he thinks about is animals. And of course, that’s why he got hurt.”

Jim’s friends have set up a GoFundMe fundraising page to help him with expenses. In just one day, 137 people have donated a total of $6,150 on the page. The comments people have left on the page really show how much Coates is loved by others. One person wrote, “Prayers to the Great Spirit for one of the most caring, wonderful employees of MCACC from me and all the animals he helped save.” Someone else posted, “I own a pet food company called Pet Wants Scottsdale, and I would like to donate some dog food for a couple of months.”
